The forgotten order

Long before the present assault, an order guarded Mirewood’s burial grounds and the stone shrine at their heart. The corruption spread through Markoria, the shrine awakened, and the dead did not remain buried. The Wraiths first encountered in Whispering Hills came from this deeper source.

The shrine’s spectral host

Bound to the cursed energies of Mirewood, these spirits have grown stronger and harder to destroy. Their spectral bodies resist ordinary weapons, but focused magic can unravel their unnatural form.

Once keepers of Mirewood’s forgotten dead, the Gravecallers now serve the darkness haunting the ancient shrine. Their lanterns call lesser spirits from beyond the veil, swelling the ranks of the restless dead.

Their small Wraithlings are lesser spirits called in pairs from the lantern’s light. Mirebound Wraiths defend the host with hardened spectral bodies, while Gravecallers increase its numbers.

A guardian bound

Once sworn to guard the resting souls of Mirewood, Morvayne was bound to the ancient shrine when the Crownless corrupted its sacred grounds. Now she commands the restless dead, striking down anyone who approaches the passage she once protected.

Her white hair and green halberd preserve the outline of a protector. Corruption turned that duty against anyone approaching the passage. Defeating Morvayne frees the guardian and secures the road; it does not identify the Crownless or resolve the wider mystery of the Wards.

The passage falls quiet — story spoilers

After the final assault, Morvayne’s halberd lies silent and the shrine’s corrupted glow fades. The burial grounds fall quiet, and the restless spirits can no longer reinforce the armies gathering against King’s Rest.
